PS3 HD & Blu-ray Scaling Problems
- November 20th, 2006 | Blu-ray
One of the major selling points for the new PS3 is / was it’s Blu-ray capability, but ever since it was released this weekend reports have been coming in of users suffering from flaky firmware. Now we here that it is also not as good with high definition video as previously thought with one user (Loot Ninja) reporting on the issue.
It seems that games designed for 1080p don’t scale properly to 1080i and may also have problems scaling to 720p. Lost Ninja goes on to say that he is having problems with Blu-ray movies playing back like a standard DVD instead of glorious high definition.
The bottom line is that after a series of discussions with Sony tech support, he had confirmation that 720p and Blu-ray movies are a no-go on the PS3 but there will be a firmware update in the next couple of days to address the situation.
If I had just splashed out on a new PS3 and went to the bother of spending more money on new Blu-ray movies to enjoy on the wonder-machine, I’d be pretty annoyed at this. And that’s an understatement.
Sony have been having their own problems with both the BDP-S1 Blu-ray player and LocationFree seeing delays. That doesn’t bode very well for getting these scaling issues fixed does it?
